About
The Yoga Dog Project

The Yoga Dog Project aims to help people and pets connect using the principles of yoga and mindfulness, to build better, calmer, happier packs.

We offer a one-month reset program, individual coaching, and an assortment of online videos and resources, available for purchase individually or as program units.

Using the principles we would apply in a human yoga practice, adapted to be relevant for our pets as well, we use a combination of physical movement, breathwork, mindfulness, and healthy diet to transform your relationship with yourself and your pets.

Meet Amanda

The Yoga Dog Project began as a way of connecting people and pets through the principles of yoga & mindfulness.

Amanda Eskenasi Hohmann, MA, PhD(c), RYT-200

Amanda is a dog trainer, registered yoga teacher, doctoral candidate, and post secondary educator. She started the Yoga Dog Project when she woke up one day and realized that her life (and her pack!) was out of control. She realized that her life's mission is to unite people and pets using the principles of yoga & mindfulness, to help build happy, calm, and peaceful packs.

FAQ

1. Are you a dog trainer? Is this just another dog training program?

I am a dog trainer, and I've lived with, and rehabilitated, dogs all my life. I've also worked with animals of all kinds, from dogs, to birds of prey and parrots, to reptiles, snakes and spiders. My connection with the animal world is an integral part of who I am. That said, my dog training background isn't what lead me to The Yoga Dog Project.

The Yoga Dog Project is NOT a dog training program, and it's NOT about 'fixing' behaviour problems in your dogs. That said, the principles applied here are based on real dog psychology, and by developing a stronger bond with your pack, you absolutely WILL see a change in how they relate to you, to each other, and to the world around them. The principles of the Yoga Dog Project may be especially helpful for nervous, anxious or fearful dogs, as they primarily aim to calm the mind and settle the body.

Outside of the training world, my professional qualifications are as a registered yoga teacher and adult educator. I've worked as a post-secondary teacher at colleges and universities for more than 15 years, and I've taught hundreds (maybe thousands?) of hours of yoga classes to people of all ages, and all walks of life.

2. What if my dog isn't trained/doesn't have great manners? Can they still follow along with the program?

Absolutely! Because this isn't a 'training' program (think of it more as a health and relationship building experience), dogs with all levels of training can excel. Of course, since a major component of the physical practice involves leash-walking, a dog with good leash skills makes things easier. But we'll give you tips and tricks for how to help your dog settle into that part of the course, even if they don't have a perfect heel.

3. My dog and I already have a good relationship, and they're well trained. Why do I need the Yoga Dog Project Program?

The Yoga Dog Project isn't a dog training program, it's a relationship and personal development program. The Yoga Dog Project uses the principles of yoga and mindfulness to help you and your pack in the same way as regular attendance at a yoga class would help you! In other words, this program is for you if you want to feel calmer, healthier and happier, and want the same for your dog! The added bonus is that by working this program together, you spend dedicated, quality time with your pack, helping to cement the bond you already have...

4. My physical health isn't great/I'm not 20 years old and super bendy/I have mobility challenges. Can I still do this?

Absolutely!! My philosophy as a yoga teacher has always been 'yoga is for everyBODY!' No matter what your level of physical health or ability, there is a practice for you at The Yoga Dog Project. Most of our physical practice is very gentle, and requires very little in the way of flexibility or mobility to get started. For those who have a higher degree of flexibility or fitness (or yoga experience) I offer modifications to kick things up a notch.

The same principle applies for dogs - they can participate no matter if they're a couch potato or a triathlete.
